February 6, 2010

When the time came to say goodbye to our beloved companion in January of 2010, we chose Sweet Dreams. Shadow, our black lab-mix, had been a central part of our lives and our family for over 16 years. Our 10 year-old daughter had just lost her grandfather two weeks prior, and was in a very fragile state, but we had no choice but to end Shadow's misery since she could no longer get up on her own.

Dr. Crowder and her assistant were just wonderful, As painful and heartbreaking as this decision can be, some of the sting was taken off by the caring, sympathetic approach Amy took in handling it for us. Not only with the in-home euthanasia - it was important for us to allow Shadow to pass away in the back yard she so dearly loved - but in the way she counseled us and felt for us, particularly our daughter. She made a terrible period in our lives as bearable as it could be, given the situation. Our beloved Shadow was treated tenderly and considerately, and her final moments were very peaceful. Her compassion for our family was very much appreciated, and she greatly softened what could have been a horribly traumatic time for our daughter - and ourselves.

Thank you again, Amy, for helping us say goodbye to Shadow in the best possible way.

A day without Augie (Augusta) is a day without sunshine. This is my first day without him. My wonderful baby boy a 115 lb Rottweiler was just shy of his 10th birthday. He had been suffering horribly from nerve damage in his leg and hip and couldn’t walk anymore. He spent his last Christmas with us and on December 26, 2009 he passed away. He passed with me holding him in my arms, on his own bed and in his home. He knew everything was going to be okay, it was his time and he wasn’t afraid anymore thanks to Dr Crowder. The comforting nature of Dr. Crowder and her gentle aid Courtney were right there beside him while he lay there in his bed.  Words can’t describe the peace of mind we both had when Dr. Crowder and her assistant came to our home. She gave my precious boy his dignity in his last moments on this earth to go to rest for eternity. I will never forget how understanding, gentle and giving she was to both of us. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!.

Dear Amy,
I can't thank you enough for all your support regarding my dog Bodhi. The last few months have been very difficult regarding Bodhi's health, and the personal struggle I've had with making the final decision on when to let go. I felt much better about the decisions I've made after your in-home exam & consultation. Your experience and advice have been greatly appreciated, however your sincere compassion and understanding have helped the most.

Dear Dr. Crowder,
Thank you for your kindness last night to both me and my precious cat, Tootsie. I don’t know what I would have done if you weren't available to help in giving Tootsie a loving and peaceful death. I wanted to post a tribute to her on your web site but I wasn’t quite sure how to do it. So I thought I’d write it here and send you a picture. Hopefully you can post it for me and or let me know how to do it.

Taking time to Grieve
Losing a pet can be similar to losing a family member.
It is not an easy thing to experience and grieving is necessary. Everyone is different in their grieving process and I encourage families to allow everyone in the family to grieve differently.

Take time to grieve the special relationship you had with your pet. Some people spend more time with their pet than extended family members and friends, so treat the loss accordingly.

One suggestion is to plant a flowering perennial in honor of your pet. Every spring, when the plant blooms, you can be reminded of your loved pet.
